A common enough question when you’re looking into orthodontic treatment is “What’s the average cost of braces?” Unfortunately, there’s not a single number you can look at since the average cost of braces differs depending on the amount of work you need done and what types of braces you choose.

The average cost of braces made of metal can range from $3,000-$7,000 and ceramic braces can range from $4,000-$8,000. Lingual braces are usually in the $8,000-$10,000 range, and clear braces like Invisalign usually cost from $4,000-$7,400.

Prices are generally at the orthodontist’s discretion and are affected by how much work you need done and your geographical location. Generally, if you’re getting braces in a rural area, it will be cheaper than getting them in a city.

If you’re not sure how to afford braces, there are several options available to you. Orthodontic treatment for children under 18 is likely to be covered partially by your dental or health plan. Adult braces are more difficult to get covered, though you do often have the option to pay for supplemental orthodontic insurance. Medicaid may also cover braces.

When you choose a plan, make sure you know how much is covered, and try to keep the same plan throughout your orthodontic treatment to avoid complications that may force you to pay out of pocket.

If insurance doesn’t cover it, you can ask your orthodontist about payment plans so you can pay back the amount as you can afford it. Getting your braces from an orthodontist-in-training can also reduce costs, and they’re always supervised by an experienced orthodontist.

No matter what option you choose, it’s important to plan ahead. If you have kids, set aside a savings account for braces down the road, or just budget accordingly. If you may need braces, factor that into your finances. And most importantly, talk to your orthodontist.

You’re not the first person that’s struggled with the cost of braces, and there are plenty of resources you can take advantage of. More can be found here.
